In the wake of failed rains and a poor harvest, communities across the Sahel region of West Africa are being pushed past the limits of their coping strategies and deeper into hunger and poverty. Estimates suggest up to fifteen million people in seven countries across the region - Niger, Chad, Mali, Burkina Faso, Senegal, Mauritania and The Gambia - live in communities currently facing a food crisis. Compounding this crisis, conflict and a coup d’etat in Mali have displaced hundreds of thousands of people and further complicated humanitarian response.
Featured speakers from West Africa and the US government will provide insight and context to the crisis, weigh in on the most pressing areas of concern, and propose needed actions to respond to immediate needs while building pathways toward greater resilience and prosperity in the region.
