Agriculture is an important contributor to the Mozambiquan economy, contributing over 20 percent to GDP. With a rich natural resource base and stable macroeconomic and political environments, annual GDP growth averaged 7.4 percent between 2000 and 2008, while the agriculture sector grew at an average of 5.4 percent over the same period. As a result, poverty and hunger have both declined, although the country still has a relatively high incidence of impoverishment.
