Agriculture is an important sector in Mali, accounting for 37 percent of total GDP, employing over 80 percent of the labor force, and serving as a key source of overall economic growth and welfare, such as food security and poverty reduction. Mali's economy is estimated to have grown at 4.1 percent in 2009, while the agriculture sector grew at 10.0 percent in 2008. The national incidence of poverty has declined over the years, with national poverty rates now estimated at 5 percent lower than the average for the 1990s and dollar a day rates nearly 40 percent lower in 2009 than their average in the same period. The national incidence of hunger has also declined since 1990, but the current estimated rate is just above the benchmark rate for 2009 to be considered on track for achieving the hunger target of the first Millennium Development Goal (MDG1). However, it is important to note that Mali is one of the few countries in Africa that is simulatenously meeting both of the CAADP targets, the poverty target of MDG1, and is close to meeting the hunger target of MDG1.
