Agriculture is the main source of livelihood for most Liberians, employing over 65 percent of the workforce. Despite a strong growth rate in the agriculture sector of 18.7 percent and the overall economy of 4.9 percent recently, poverty and hunger persist at relatively high levels. In 2007, over 80 percent of the population was estimated to live below the international one dollar (US$1.25) a day poverty line. Undernourishment has also been increasing, from 34 percent in 1990 to over 43 percent in 2009.
