Ghana’s economy has been witnessing relatively strong economic growth in the past few years, due mainly to its rich natural resource base, sound reforms and political stability. The country’s real GDP growth rate was estimated at 4.5 percent in 2009, an increase from the average annual growth rates of 5.3 percent over 2000 to 2008 and 4.3 percent over 1990 to 1999. Agriculture GDP growth has also improved since the 1990s, reaching 5.4 percent in 2008. As a result, both poverty and hunger have significantly declined over the past 3 decades.
